Solving the
Flamenco Puzzle
with Ulrika
Frank and Marija Temo
Ulrika
Frank, flamenco dancer, and Marija Temo, flamenco guitarist and singer, each
known for their educational and informative teaching styles, have collaborated
to offer a unique workshop experience. The
focus is on the structure of flamenco dance and song forms in how the dance,
guitar, and singing communicate with one another.
The workshop is
designed for guitarists, singers, and dancers to work together with the
different musical options presented by Marija during the Communication classes and
the choreography options that are taught in Ulrika’s dance classes.
Dancers will be taught why, when, where, and how certain
steps and movements require adjustments according to the musical
form of the singing. The goal is for dancers to be better equipped to
apply these concepts to their own material. An escobilla with a focus on the
importance of dynamics and musicality, will also be taught
Guitarists will learn how to accompany a song form with
its variations in melody and structure while simultaneously accompanying the
dance. Chordal and rhythmic patterns
will be shown and developed into more advanced ones along with concepts on finding
and/or creating falsetas that best
accompany dance footwork, escobillas.
Singers
will learn the form of a verse and how its structure and melody varies. Accentuations, key pitches, and dynamic
contrasts will be shown to guide both the guitarist and dancer in how the form
is to be accompanied, and how it can be sung in different ways so as to inspire
interpretation and improvisation from the guitarist and dancer.
The dance classes are accompanied with guitar and
singing by Marija, and are open to guitarists and singers to participate
and/or audit at a lower fee per class.
Note that the choreography,
music accompaniment, and singing verses provided in the dance classes will be
explored in the Communication Classes. Please
bring paper and pens for the Communication classes.

To all flamenco enthusiasts,
What a privilege it is to offer a workshop in collaboration
with Ulrika Frank! I am looking so forward to presenting this unique
workshop that is the first of its kind to be offered in DC. I have taught
my communication class with great success for dancers, singers, and guitarists
as an invited guest teacher for over 10 years at the International Flamenco
Festival in Albuquerque, NM. However, in DC it will be
presented in a new format where Ulrika’as teaching methods and mine will be
united to offer a complete dance and musical learning experience.
FOR IMMEDIATE
ATTENTION
It would be extremely helpful if you can register (even if
you audit) as soon as possible to help the presenters not have an overload of
registrations and finances to organize the last days before the workshop. Because of unforeseen travel plans for Nora
Lopez, it is important that we have a
certain number of registrations before April 25 to help this process go
smoothly. Maria Roncal will be helping throughout
and also during Nora’s absence. If you
are able to register early, it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you to Nora and Maria for your support
and help. Olé!!
TO HELP CLARIFY WHAT
FRANK/TEMO WORKSHOP IS ABOUT AND WHAT CLASSES TO TAKE:
It has been brought to my attention that there is some confusion
regarding the workshop. I hope this
helps: The 4 day workshop is made up
of two classes, one by Ulrika
Frank and one by Marija Temo. The workshop explores the dance with the
music and the music with the dance. The
two classes are designed to be taken together so a complete experience of
working with singing, guitar, and dance is learned. The material learned in Ulrika’s class is
then further explored and practiced with the musical options in Marija’s class. All
dancers, guitarists, and singers are encouraged to sign up for both
classes.
The registration form provides the package/full workshop
deal for taking both Ulrika’s and Marija’s class together and provides the cost
for a dancer, guitarist, or singer. If
you are dancer, simply sign up for the full workshop and the dance level you
want to take. If you are a guitarist or
singer, the same format applies, simply sign up for the full workshop and specify
what dance level you want to play/sing for, or audit. Signing up in this way, allows us to know how
many dancers, guitarists, and singers will be attending. The more musicians and dancers attending, the
better the experience will be for all. Single/Separate
class fees are available but vary in price if you just want Marija’s
communication class, Ulrika’s dance class, or if you are a guitarist/singer and
just want to participate/audit the dance classes. (You can also take Ulrika’s class without
Marija’s and vice versa, but keep in mind you will truly benefit by taking the
class combination.)
HERE ARE SOME
QUESTIONS TO ALL OF YOU THAT DESCRIBE WHY THIS WORKSHOP IS AN
OPPORTUNITY
NOT TO MISS OUT ON:
Do you want a chance to experience and practice working with
live singing, guitar, and dance, and learn the ways to clearly convey how to
accompany one another from a dancers, guitarists, and singers viewpoint?
Isn’t this the type of setting we strive and study so hard
to be able to do? We study dance,
guitar, and singing with individual teachers who specialize in these areas so
we can work towards being able to perform in a fiesta, tablao, or concert
setting.
As dancers don’t you want to convey your body movements and
steps based on what the guitar and cante are doing, and better yet, come up
with your own interpretative movements? Can
you clearly convey your body signals to the guitarist and cante? Do you know
what the signals are and which accents are the most important? Can you improvise and adjust your
choreography to the different ways the letra is sung and the way the guitar is
played?
Guitarists, can you accompany with rasqueados and falsetas that
best follow the dance and cante and improvise to it? Can you inspire the dancer to create or
change their way of dancing the choregraphy or the singers way of singing? How
do you know what to do for the dancer and read the dancers body language? Do you know the chord progression for the
verse/letra and how and where to respond with falsetas, and accompany it in
ways that inspire the singer to sing it differently.
Singers, do you know the basic structure of the letra and
how to go about guiding the guitarist to accompany it properly? Do you know how to sing it in different ways
to best accompany the dancers choregraphy?
I do hope you will take advantage of this unique
opportunity. LET’S HAVE FUN AND LEARN WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT!
