February 2009

Hola Familia,

Coming once again is our bi-annual Flamenco de las Americas "A Tablao Experience with Art and Passion." February 20th - 22nd.

The performances are dedicated, in loving memory, to Todd Craun, who was President of the Board of Directors of Pasion y Arte. He was instrumental in the development and the growth of Pasion y Arte, a great man who will be sorely missed.

Pasion y Arte presents: Flamenco de las Americas "A Tablao Experience with Art and Passion"Featuring Pasion y Arte, guests from the Americas and Pasion y Arte Conservatory Students.Special Guest Guitarist/Cantaora (singer) Marija TemoSaturday there is a post-performance discussion regarding all of the components of flamenco.

The performances have two main goals: to promote the work of high-level flamenco masters who are not from Spain and to educate the Philadelphia public about tablao.

What is tablao?

Like the atmosphere once created when beat poets gathered to recite verses, tablao refers to the milieu in which flamencos showcased their dancing until the art was institutionalized in theatrical performances. Flamenco emerged as a unique art form in the 15th century. Spanish Gypsies (or Roma) danced flamenco privately in their rural homes. The dance gradually migrated from the countryside to south Spain's cities, where Gypsy artists performed on the streets and in plazas. By the 1840s, nightclubs called "cafes del cante" began to host flamenco tablao, giving flamencos the opportunity to demonstrate their extraordinary skills at improvising movement within the confines of rigid rhythmic structures. The cafes were the first enterprises to pay flamenco dancers, singers, and musicians. Commercial flamenco was born. From the mid 1800s-early 1900s, highly acclaimed flamenco artists danced in cafes del cante. Tablao performances helped flamenco to grow in expressive range and aesthetic precision, exposing non- Gypsy audiences to the art. Flamenco de Las Americas will recreate the feeling of the tablao setting, using the intimacy offered by the Plays and Players 3rd Floor Cabaret Theatre to greatest effect.

Flamenco Communication Workshop

This extraordinary Flamenco Communication Workshop will be presented by Marija Temo.

Specialized Workshops focus on Dancers, Guitarists, and Singers

Sought after for her unique ability to teach all three of the flamenco
genres (guitar, dance, and singing), Ms. Temo explores what is required from each of them to effectively communicate/interact, accompany, compliment, and improvise with one another through a breakdown on the structure of flamenco dance and song forms.

Dancers learn the structural components and order of a flamenco dance form, how to effectively communicate signals for the different components, and how and where to apply movements and choreography properly to the musical form of the singing.

Guitarists also learn the structural components of a flamenco dance form in order to anticipate the order from the dancer, and learn the common chordal and rhythmic patterns used to accompany both the singing and the dance simultaneously as well as when to apply falsetas.

Guitarists are guided in playing more advanced rhythmic patterns and finding and/or creating falsetas that best accompany dance footwork.

Singers learn the structural components of a flamenco dance form in order to know when the singing is to accompany the dance.

They also learn how and where to place proper accentuations within the verse and apply key pitches to guide guitarists on how to accompany the changes correctly.

In addition, singers are shown how to vary the way the form is sung so as to inspire the guitarist and dancer to interpret and improvise to the singing.
