- Flamenco Communication
(Sample title and description of introductory flamenco guitar master class):
An introductory approach to flamenco guitar techniques, rhythm, and
improvisation for all guitar styles, and levels.
A foundational strumming pattern used in all flamenco forms
is taught in a tension free manner to develop volume, strength, and stamina. This basic strum is then applied to one or
more flamenco rhythmic patterns with practice methods on accenting different
beats within them. Step by step,
additional strumming techniques are added to the basic strum to develop rasqueados (flamenco rolls and
continuous rolls). These are then
applied to the flamenco rhythmic patterns.
As the students begin to grasp these combinations, rhythmic and melodic
variations are introduced. Students walk
away with a solid introduction to flamenco techniques, rhythm, improvisation,
and style. Back to top
Sought after for her unique ability to teach all three of the flamenco genres (guitar, dance, and singing), Temo explores what is required from each of them to effectively communicate/interact, accompany, compliment,
and improvise with one another through a breakdown on the structure of flamenco dance and song forms. Dancers
learn the structural components and order of a flamenco dance form, how to effectively communicate signals for the different components, and how and where to apply movements and choreography properly to the musical
form of the singing. Guitarists also learn the structural components of a flamenco dance form in order to anticipate the order from the dancer, and learn the common chordal
and rhythmic patterns used to accompany both the singing and the dance
simultaneously as well as when to apply falsetas.
Guitarists are guided in playing more advanced rhythmic
patterns and finding and/or creating falsetas
that best accompany dance footwork. Singers
learn the structural components of a flamenco dance form in order to know when the singing is to accompany the dance. They also learn how and where to place proper accentuations within the verse and apply key
pitches to guide guitarists on how to accompany the changes correctly. In addition, singers are shown how to vary the way the
form is sung so as to inspire the guitarist and dancer to interpret and
improvise to the singing.
Marija's
Communication Course was offered for 10 years consecutively at the University of New Mexico
International Flamenco Festival, and it continues to be in
demand throughout various cities in the US.
