Learn to identify communication challenges, refine musical expression, and build confidence in performing flamenco material.

This is an application-based class for experienced intermediate to advanced students, providing them with an opportunity to practice a tablao style run-through of their repertoire of choice with other dancers, guitarists, singers, and palmeros in a live setting as is done in flamenco performances.

Students receive targeted feedback from guest artists on tablao communication skills. As a bonus, guest artists will perform, offering participants the chance to accompany them.

Choose a palo you want to perform & receive feedback on. Marija will organize a roster/schedule, assigning musicians and dancers. 

1:00- 2:15p.m. Guest Artist Lunch Talks

Informal conversations with guest artists on flamenco, careers, and personal stories.

 2:30 -6:15p.m  Learn to Speak Flamenco: Bulerías (all levels)

2:30- 4:15p.m Bulerias Elements

The elements of bulerias are taught in a systematic way, breaking down how singing, dancing, and accompaniment interact to create the inimitable bulerias style. Students will walk away with knowledge of common structures and develop their ear training skills so they’re able to identify key cues in the structure. Students gain a deeper understanding of bulerias compás, verse structure, dance structure, role of the guitar, therefore unlocking the often mystifying improvisational codes of bulerias or for those more experienced, deepening their ability to improvisation with more nuance and variety.

4:30p.m – 6:15pm. Bulerias: Practical Experience & Analysis

This application-based class builds on the Bulerías Elements Class beforehand.

Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of bulerías and how to communicate bulerias in their discipline with more confidence. Participants try out bulerías steps, letras (singing verses), and accompaniment, individually or in combination.

 Guest artists help give feedback on each participant’s material and guide them in executing it with greater command, expanded options, and musicality.  More advanced students will bring their own complete bulerias to try out with the cuadro, getting immediate feedback and serving as examples for beginner students. Beginner students will also get the chance to put into practice the material learned in Bulerias Elements. Everyone will participate, accompanying with palmas and jaleos when they are not performing their discipline/repertoire of choice.

 6:00p.m. Dinner and Juerga (a fun flamenco party). Bring food and drink to share. Families, friends, and anyone interested are welcome.
