We’re excited to announce an in person workshop series this summer every other Tuesday at All Saints Cathedral. Now that we have the opportunity to meet again in person we’d like to create a community building flamenco series open to all levels and all disciplines.
Dancers will have the opportunity to put their flamenco skills into practice with live music and guitarists will work on accompaniment. We’ll all be working on rhythm, palmas and deepening our flamenco knowledge. Movement sequences will be taught and practiced with cante and guitar at a level that everyone can participate in. Let’s have fun!
Experience flamenco’s intensity, strength, and expressiveness with Abrepaso’s newest production, En Camino. The work features new choreography by Artistic Director Alice Blumenfeld (Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award recipient FY20) and new music by guitarist and singer Marija Temo (most recently seen on Telemundo’s La Voz). They are joined by versatile percussionist and composer Liam Smith, along with Abrepaso’s apprentices, who showcase the diversity of Cleveland, each expressing their unique selves and stories through this Spanish dance form.
In-person tickets are going quickly due to limited seating, but you can still see the show online June 12th – June 22nd, and join us for an artist talk after the premiere on the 12th! Visit www.abrepaso.org/tickets to get yours today.

Soleá por Bulería – Salida/Llamada
In this workshop we’ll be exploring a soleá por bulería salida and llamada. We’ll look at how the llamada can be timed to complement the singer’s salida and demonstrate different places where the dancer can begin the llamada. Singers will have the opportunity to work with salidas while dancers try different ways to start the llamada. Players will work on the accompaniment for a basic llamada as well as specific accompaniment for the llamada we use in the workshop. We’ll talk about how to create a llamada with musical interest and how to give clear accents for the player. We’ll also look at how to anticipate the ending of the cante salida to begin the llamada, how to give a clear cue that you’re starting the llamada and what to do if you miss it.
Dancers who register by Wednesday April 28thwill receive a prep video that includes the choreography we’ll use in the workshop.
All participants will receive a practice video following the workshop with the material we cover.
As always in our live workshops we answer your questions, discuss how to best support each other, act out the problem spots and illustrate how to clearly communicate with your dancer, guitarist and singer.
Payments must be received by 11am CST on the day of the workshop. Please ensure the payment email address you use is the same email you wish to receive the Zoom link for the workshop.

El Aire de Los Fandangos
Join Kerensa DeMars and I in a workshop exploring a fandangos estribillo (cante) and discussing how to differentiate the estribillo from the letra. We’ll look at which steps work well for the estribillo and how to accompany the estribillo for players. We’ll also explore the ‘aire’ or feeling of fandangos, how it’s different from other palos and how to express this aire in the singing, dance and guitar. Marija and Kerensa will demonstrate different options for where to place the estribillo in fandangos and how to create repeats with the estribillo to accommodate multiple letras/dancers in a tablao setting.
Dancers who register by Wednesday March 31stwill receive a prep video that includes the choreography we’ll use in the workshop. All participants will receive a practice video following the workshop with the material we cover.
