Flamenco Revealed Online Workshop (for dancers, guitarists, and singers)
w/ Kerensa DeMars & Marija Temo
Sat. July 17TH
1-2:30PM CST (2-3:30p.m. EST/ 11-12:30 PT)
Staying in Shape(s) POSTPONED
Despite the cheeky title this workshops covers a very important part of flamenco communication – how the dancer moves on stage and the shapes she/he creates. Using a section of a dance (escobilla transition to a letra) we’ll look at how the dancer cues the singer and guitarist by the way they move from one place to the next and what happens when the movement isn’t clear. Guitarists will have a chance to work with understanding the pattern/shapes the dancer creates so they can anticipate the sequence and find a strong musical accompaniment. Singers will work on anticipating cues so they can relax and do some jaleo and feel confident about when the letra comes in. Dancers will look at how their shapes/patterns are read by the musicians and how to give clear signals.
Dancers who register by WednesdayJuly 14th will receive a prep video that includes the choreography we’ll use in the workshop.
All participants will receive a practice video following the workshop with the material we cover.

We’re excited to announce an in person workshop series this summer every other Tuesday at All Saints Cathedral. Now that we have the opportunity to meet again in person we’d like to create a community building flamenco series open to all levels and all disciplines.
Dancers will have the opportunity to put their flamenco skills into practice with live music and guitarists will work on accompaniment. We’ll all be working on rhythm, palmas and deepening our flamenco knowledge. Movement sequences will be taught and practiced with cante and guitar at a level that everyone can participate in. Let’s have fun!
Experience flamenco’s intensity, strength, and expressiveness with Abrepaso’s newest production, En Camino. The work features new choreography by Artistic Director Alice Blumenfeld (Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award recipient FY20) and new music by guitarist and singer Marija Temo (most recently seen on Telemundo’s La Voz). They are joined by versatile percussionist and composer Liam Smith, along with Abrepaso’s apprentices, who showcase the diversity of Cleveland, each expressing their unique selves and stories through this Spanish dance form.
In-person tickets are going quickly due to limited seating, but you can still see the show online June 12th – June 22nd, and join us for an artist talk after the premiere on the 12th! Visit www.abrepaso.org/tickets to get yours today.
