10/26/19 Workshops: (Violin w/ S. Gibons, Takoma Park, MD), & (Flamenco Communication for dancers, singers, and guitarists w/ Wendy Clinard & Marija Temo, D.C)

Posted by admin - October 4th, 2019

Sat., Oct. 26: Violin Workshop

Steve Gibons’ Music Improv Workshop for Classical and World Music String Players
(A workshop scaled to the expertise of the participants.)

Time: 11:00a.m.- 2:00p.m.

Duration: 3 hours – All ages and instruments welcome

Location: (John Kendall Recital Hall)
at Potter Violins: Fine Violins, Violas, Cellos and Bows
7711 Eastern Ave.
Takoma Park, MD
(On site parking available)

Free Workshop ($15 Donation suggested)

Gibons uses ideas that will be familiar to string players with classical training to bridge the gap between the worlds of written music and that of improv. The workshop also accommodates a wide variety of skill levels by scaling the complexity of the melodic lines and rhythmic harmony parts we use to the participants comfort.  At the very minimum, students must be fluent enough on their instrument to play
scales in first position with two accidentals. There is no maximum requirement.  European Gypsy music, Gypsy Jazz, Middle Eastern music, and American Songbook jazz standards are the genres used as a base for the workshop repertoire. These all share many aspects of improvisation technique. All parts are learned by ear.

About Kerensa DeMars

Marija Temo’s Flamenco Communication Workshop

A specialized Interactive Workshop, created by Temo, (for Dancers, Guitarists, and Singers) on what is required from each of them to effectively communicate (interact, accompany, compliment, and improvise) with one another through a breakdown on the structure of flamenco dance and song forms. Sought after for her unique ability to teach all three of the flamenco genres (dance, guitar, and singing), Temo explains (through the use of graphic charts that she has devised) the underlying structure of complete flamenco dance and song forms, demonstrates important moments that need to be conveyed, and has participants try out the process.  Her workshops were offered for 10 years consecutively at the University of New Mexico International Flamenco Festival, at the Toronto International Flamenco Festival, and reviewed in magazines such as Flamenco USA, Flamenco International (London, England), and Dance Magazine. Temo has traveled to many cities in the US offering her Communication Workshop helping flamenco communities develop their communication skills in how to work with guitarists, singers, and dancers.
